Overview: The Methodology section is dedicated to sharing best practices for scoping and delivering Business Impact Analyses (BIAs). This includes how participants select which business units undergo a BIA and the methods they use to gather and document the necessary information. Understanding these methodologies helps in standardizing and improving the BIA process across the organization.

Contributions:

Please share your methodology for scoping and delivering BIAs. You can include text and/or attach relevant screenshots for clarity.

Key Areas to Address:

  • Scoping: Describe your approach to selecting which business units undergo a BIA.
  • Delivery Method: Share the methods you use to gather and document information (e.g., interviews, surveys).
  • Best Practices: Highlight any tips or best practices that have worked well for you.

Example Contribution:

Scoping: We prioritize business units based on their criticality to the organization’s overall operations. Factors considered include the potential impact of disruptions, regulatory requirements, and past incidents. A risk assessment is conducted to identify high-risk areas that require immediate attention.

Delivery Method: We primarily use structured interviews with key stakeholders and department heads to gather detailed information. This is supplemented with surveys and reviews of existing documentation to ensure comprehensive data collection.

Best Practices:
- Develop a clear criteria and framework for selecting business units to undergo a BIA.

- Schedule interviews in advance and provide participants with a list of questions to prepare.

- Use a combination of data collection methods (interviews, surveys, document reviews) to ensure accuracy and completeness.

- Regularly review and update your methodology to incorporate lessons learned and new best practices.

Reminder:

  • Confidentiality: Do not include any confidential or sensitive information from your organization.
  • Tags: Tag your response appropriately so others can easily search and find your contribution.

Your contributions will help in building a comprehensive understanding of effective methodologies for scoping and delivering BIAs, which is essential for developing an efficient Business Continuity Strategy.

We need to have a good source of truth for the organization, typically from an HRIS and we review it for the distribution of the organization (org, business units, departments, cost centers).  Sometimes the list is overwhelming and we need to narrow the focus. So we group them...  General rule of thumb I like to use is to review the directors and VPs of an org... that usually gives a good sense of the people you may need to talk to.  We can also take a top down approach and look at the e-staff orgs, or even line of business (or products and services).

The method will be a combination of interview and surveys, I find that the interview method is more favorable and gets you engaged with the business on a personal level.
