On Thursday, July 27th, BRMA hosted Joy of Metrics Workshop with Dr Jones and Dawn Grzena with 20 attendees (14 members and 6 guests). 

In the heart of San Francisco’s financial hub, Indeed hosted BRMA members and guests to its stylish and modern location. The fun collaboration amenities made this event space the right place for a successful ‘Joy of Metrics Workshop’, lead by Dr Bernard Jones and Dawn Grzena.

Let me ask you this. Have you ever sat down with a Ph.D. to discuss what matters in your line of work? To find out what drives leadership? An occasion to gain real insight into methods and techniques for effective metrics? I haven’t done that since college!

I was so pumped to get this opportunity to pick a tenured professor’s brain. I got inspiration from his years of educating, mentoring, and scientific research. Not to mention hearing from a seasoned and established resilience leader like Dawn Grzena. She shared her career experience (the joys and the struggles) using her quick wit and comedic timing. I laughed the whole time.

As we know, resilience metrics provide quantitative and qualitative data that will help leaders understand how resilient our organization is. During the presentation, they pointed out metric improvements, including using qualitative exercise observation metrics and experimenting with predictive analytics. In addition, they shared their extensive metrics research and analysis with us for in-depth reporting. But let’s be honest, it’s not the joy of metrics that drives organizations, it’s the fear of not measuring up!

Metrics development and publishing can be daunting, but this workshop provided both the science and the art. I walked away feeling stimulated with new insights, validated with positive feedback and reaffirmed my camaraderie with my peers revitalizing the BRMA community.

The session brought together our community of contingency and risk practitioners looking for meaningful metrics. This lunch and learn included an interactive approach to instruction, engaging in hands-on exercises, discussion and problem solving activities related to the topic at hand.

You need moments like these to grow professionally and personally. Your career journey will be inspired, your relationships will be stronger, and our sense of community will be nourished. My motivation and sense of purpose were renewed by this experience.

BRMA is a fantastic way to connect with other leaders in the industry, share ideas and best practices.

How did you get started in the industry?

Right out of undergrad, I was hired into the Product Development group and then on day three, my boss moved me to a new group to manage the global Disaster Recovery program! I had no idea what that was, but I went through rigorous training with a bunch of IBM consultants and learned everything about mainframes, tape restore, and BIAs!

What qualifications / certifications do you hold?

CBCP (DRII), Crisis Management (MIT)

What is the title and author of the last book you read?

Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance

How long have you been in your current role?

Since August 2017, but have been in higher education emergency management/business continuity for over 15 years.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining BRMA?

BRMA is a vibrant organization of practitioners with diverse backgrounds and subject matter expertise. You can access a wealth of knowledge and experience.

How did you get started in the industry?

I received my MS in Environmental Sciences and thought I would be cleaning up groundwater contamination sites. Right out of school, I started with an environmental firm that also provided emergency response and business continuity planning services for many different government agencies, non-profit and for profit organizations. I really enjoyed thinking about different kinds of hazards and how to mitigate, plan, respond, and recover from those events.

What qualifications / certifications do you hold?

I hold a Certified Emergency Manager credential from the International Association of Emergency Managers.

What is your proudest professional achievement(s)?

One of my proudest professional achievements was to chair a committee that planned and hosted a personal/family preparedness outdoor street fair for the Palo Alto and Stanford communities. I received special recognition from Congresswoman Anna Eshoo for that work.

What is the title and author of the last book you read?

We Fed an Island: The True Story of Rebuilding Puerto Rico, One Meal at a Time by Jose Andres. A great read for those in the restaurant/hospitality sector as well as mass care and shelter.

Which industry-related conference did you last attend?

I lasted attended the University and College Caucus 2017 Symposium at the International Association of Emergency Managers Annual Conference.

What organizations do you volunteer with?

I volunteer extensively at my son’s Parent Teacher Association.

What is your favorite hobby?

I have two favorites; camping and knitting. When I get to do both, it is absolute heaven.
